No. 3 Michigan Wolverines football will take on No. 2 Ohio State Saturday in Columbus (noon ET on FOX) for all the marbles. The winner heads to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game and is almost guaranteed to earn a College Football Playoff bid. The loser will have to wait eight long days to learn its fate determined on selection Sunday, Dec. 4.

With both teams 11-0, this is just the fourth time since 1935 — when Michigan and Ohio State began playing on the regular-season’s final weekend — that both squads are undefeated heading into the matchup. Michigan and Ohio State were both undefeated entering ‘The Game’ in 1970, 1973 and 2006.

Ohio State has won two of those three meetings, in 1970 and 2006. The 1973 matchup ended in a 10-10 tie.

In 1970, the Buckeyes avenged their 1969 loss at Michigan Stadium with a 20-9 victory in Columbus. The Wolverines averaged 31 points per game coming in, but were held to single digits. They ran for only 37 rushing yards.

The 1973 meeting didn’t come without subsequent controversy. The winner was set to go to the Rose Bowl, but since there wasn’t a victor at The Big House that Saturday, the Big Ten turned to a vote of the athletic directors to select the league’s representative in Pasadena.

The Buckeyes edged the Wolverines out in the final tally (had it been tied, Michigan would’ve been sent to the Rose Bowl since Ohio State went the prior year).

The 2006 rendition of the rivalry was dubbed ‘The Game of the Century,’ a No. 1 (Ohio State) vs. No. 2 (Michigan) matchup, winner to the national title game. The Buckeyes won a barnburner, 42-39, in Columbus, and Michigan didn’t get a rematch in the national championship, with the BCS instead selecting Florida, the eventual champion.

Who will break the tie in Columbus?

Michigan and Ohio State have played in Columbus 56 times, and it’s all knotted up, 27-27-2. One team will take the advantage this weekend. Michigan leads the series overall (59-52-6) and in Ann Arbor (32-24-4).

If the Wolverines do pull off the upset as one-touchdown underdogs, it’ll be quite the accomplishment. Mostly due to Ohio State being a great team in recent history, the Horseshoe is an extremely tough place to play.

The Buckeyes are winners of 29 consecutive Big Ten games and haven’t lost a conference tilt at the venue since 2015, a 17-14 setback to Michigan State. Their last overall loss at Ohio Stadium was to Oregon last September (35-28).

Ohio State has beaten Michigan eight straight times in Columbus, with U-M’s last win being a 38-26 triumph in 2000, led by quarterback Drew Henson.

There have been dramatic swings throughout the history of the rivalry. From 1985 to 2000, Michigan won 12 games to Ohio State’s three, with one tie in 1992. From that point forward, though, the Buckeyes have dominated the series, winning 17 of the last 20.

Michigan won last year’s game 42-27 at The Big House and is searching to win two in a row for the first time since 1999-2000.
