Michigan beat Oregon, 80-76, in a game that the Wolverines led by 14 points with 12 minutes to go. They gutted it out at the end, as they have in many games this season, in this one playing great defense, grabbing big rebounds and making clutch free throws.
“Michigan holds on and beats Oregon on Wednesday night at Crisler, 80-76,” Sayfie said. “This is a game that we’ve seen play out multiple times this season. Michigan holds a 14-point lead with 12 minutes to go. Next thing you know, down the stretch you still had the lead … I mean, Michigan led for over 32 minutes in this game … but their grasp on the game, control on the game, was not as tight as the game went on, and as the game actually got tighter. Oregon was back in it.

“That’s 10 of 17 games now for Michigan against high-major opponents that have been decided by six points or fewer. Their last four wins have been decided by four points or fewer. By the way, 6-4 in the games decided by six or fewer this season overall, which, OK, you lose one of them and it’s 50-50. You’re kinda in coin flip territory when you’re in those situations. I keep saying it, and really for a few years now, because there’s been this issue — other than last year — with the close games, it’s more about being in this many of them than it is not winning half of them.
“They let them back in. They played really well for 25, 30 minutes in this game, and then the turnover issue and you start missing shots and just kinda crept in. Nine turnovers in nine minutes. Three travels in three minutes for [junior guard] Roddy Gayle Jr. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that before. [Junior guard] Tre Donaldson had a stretch there where he was kinda all over the place for a couple minutes. Nimari Burnett with some turnovers.
“But Michigan did make enough plays to win. I thought they rebounded well at the end and they hit some clutch free throws.”
