Wolverine TV podcast: NFL Draft predictions, Michigan trending for portal kicker, team trip
TheWolverine.com‘s Clayton Sayfie and Anthony Broome preview Michigan Wolverines football prospects in the NFL Draft, discuss the Wolverines’ pursuing a transfer portal kicker and talk about the upcoming team trip around the East Coast.
We start with talk about the NFL Draft. It appeared over the last few weeks that cornerback DJ Turner was Michigan’s best chance at having a first-round pick for the fifth straight year, but now he’s being widely regarded as a second rounder. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Mazi Smith is being projected in the first round in most mock drafts that were released in the last two days. He’ll likely go late in the round, with there being a lot of teams in that area who are in need of a defensive tackle. The Athletic‘s Dane Brugler called him the best “run-stuffer” in the entire draft, and that’s valuable. Michigan could have seven or eight prospects drafted, including some who have seen their stock fall.
We then continue the conversation with discussion of former Louisville kicker James Turner — a Saline, Mich., native who entered the portal this week and asked schools not to contact him. That’s an indication that he knows his likely landing spot, and many expect it to be Michigan. We discuss the impact that he could have (is he a missing piece on a championship team?).
We finish by talking about Michigan’s upcoming team trip, which begins this weekend. The Wolverines will stop in New York City, Washington D.C., Gettysburg, Cleveland and Canton. Michigan will travel by plane, train and bus to see some iconic spots. TheWolverine.com will be on hand in multiple stops to bring you coverage.
