By the numbers: What’s with the early-down success, third-down struggles for the Michigan defense?

Illinois is wearing 1920s-themed throwback uniforms for this weekend’s game, commemorating the 1924 win over a then-undefeated Michigan team. The Fighting Illini are also rededicating their stadium that they’ve sold out multiple times in one season for the first time since 2009.

“That place should be rocking. That place should be going crazy,” head coach Bret Bielema said.

“Other game day features include a special pregame presentation of the game ball by some of Illinois’ most legendary players, a flyover conducted by the United States Navy, all former football players in attendance being honored at halftime, and a halftime performance by the Marching Illini involving family members of Illinois’ athletic architects from the early years — athletic director George Huff, head football coach Robert Zuppke and Red Grange,” the Illinois athletics website announced.

The Michigan podcast hosts shared their thoughts on the uniforms Illinois will break out.

“Just another example of how ‘throwback’ doesn’t always mean it’s a great idea,” Balas said. “Remember the bumblebee uniforms at Michigan State? Everybody liked them when they wore them at home [against Notre Dame], when Michigan did. And then all of the sudden, you get these uniforms, they threw them on them at the last minute, they were too tight. It was a disaster, and then they got their ass kicked.

“To me, this looks like a pumpkin head uniform. It looks stupid. I guess, the Halloween theme is kinda nice or whatever. Everybody is gonna be, ‘Oh,’ all gaga about it. Whatever it takes.

“They hate Michigan down there. I think the intangibles are in Illinois’ favor. They’ve got the 100th year or whatever of the stadium and Red Grange day and goofy uniforms. This will add to it, but man, that’s just a bad look in my opinion. I don’t know.”

“It’s abhorrent. I’m offended looking at it. All of the above. These are terrible,” Broome said. “Not to give away anything later in terms of picking the game, but I can’t, in good conscious, pick Illinois to win this game wearing something like that. Awful.”
