“I was at that game in 1984,” Balas said of Michigan’s win over the Hurricanes. “That was really a defense led game, and Bernie Kosar threw 6 picks. [Linebacker] Rodney Lyles picked off 3 of them himself and that Michigan offense was terrible that game. But they found a way to win, right?
“We’ve been saying that about this Michigan few, maybe a few times, this year. Against USC, they weren’t terrible. In the second half they were terrible, and for much of that game they were terrible, but they got a miraculous run at the end of the game by [graduate] Kalel Mullings that won that football game, and then on Saturday did just enough in terms of a couple trick plays, they got enough from [senior] Davis Warren and just enough from [junior] Alex Orji in the run game to pull it out. I think that’s probably what has to happen here.
“They’ve gotta hold them to field goals, guys. Oregon is going to drive the field — I don’t think there’s any question about that — but it’s a matter of keeping them out of the end zone to have a chance to win this football game, which is something they haven’t done enough of.
“Otherwise, I don’t think this will be a Texas type game, but at the same time I think that Oregon is really good. They’ve improved, they’ve gotten a lot better and this is a challenge. Now if Michigan had lost to Michigan State going into this game, I would have guessed that this would be a blowout loss. Now, I think that maybe this rallies the troops a little bit.”
