Michigan is 5-5 heading into the senior day matchup with Northwestern, one win away from achieving bowl eligibility. The Maize and Blue have had a disappointing season overall but have the chance to end on a high note at The Big House.

“Northwestern plays hard,” Balas said. “They’re not very good. Our Anthony Broome would call this a rock fight — I think that’s what we’re headed to.

“But for some reason, guys — and I don’t know what it is — I think the Michigan offense will pick it up a bit this week. I think there are going to be guys motivated to play their best games, and their last game at Michigan Stadium, some seniors, maybe some juniors, maybe some underclassmen who, guys, are maybe going to hit the portal — that’s just the reality of college football these days.

“But any time you get to see Michigan play in The Big House … and it’s gonna be almost another year, nine months until we get to see them again, you have to appreciate it.

“A lot of people giving up their tickets; that’s disappointing.

“But to me, it’s gonna come down to how the offense moves the ball on the ground. They gotta do better. I’m looking forward, of course, to Ohio State, but last chance to see these guys in The Big House, and I hope the seniors and the guys that helped win championships get the applause that they deserve. What a class, what a group of guys. They’ve done something that, frankly, nobody else has done in Michigan history in the modern era and bring us a national championship, undisputed. It’s been fantastic to watch these guys play.”

“Hopefully, good weather, good response from the fan base on Saturday,” Broome said. “That’d be a great way to start it off.

“The further and further we get away from what last year was, you really just focus on what the task at hand is here, and that’s getting that sixth win, setting yourself up. Not just getting it … OK, the sixth win is great, but if you win this game, 19-17, on a walk-off field goal, yeah, you got your sixth win, but is that something to feel good about? I don’t know.

“This is a Northwestern team that Michigan is favored by two scores to beat. At this point, you’re just taking the season for what it is. What you want to see this week is a team as ready as it can possibly be to go into Columbus next week.”
