Michigan is heading into its opener, nine days away from playing Fresno State, with the quarterback situation. Both senior Davis Warren and junior Alex Orji are unproven, the hosts pointed out, which means live, game action could help determine how the competition plays out.

“We haven’t seen them throw passes in games, hardly at all,” Balas said. “It is time for [Orji] to show what he can do, time for Davis Warren to show what he can do.

“But I’ll tell you this, there’s a lot, a lot of talent on this football team. Not just the ones, the backups, too, and the young guys. That was one thing that stood out to me yesterday was from a practice observer from guys waiting in the wings were either vastly underrated over overlooked. But they think there’s a ton of talent on this team, from the senior class to the freshman class, and they’re in good hands with [head coach] Sherrone Moore.”

Sayfie weighed in on the Michigan quarterbacks, sharing his hesitancy until games begin.

“I’m kind of in wait and see mode there,” Sayfie said. “And I would feel a lot better if whoever the starting quarterback was had to beat out [graduate] Jack Tuttle, or a healthy Jack Tuttle, to do it. Or if it was Jack Tuttle that took the job and he had to beat out the other two that were fully healthy.

“It doesn’t mean that somebody hasn’t risen to that level where they would’ve beaten him out anyway, but just the fact that he’s been limited kind of leads me to be as much or more hesitant than I was.”
