“I think Butch Jones is a pretty good football coach,” Balas said. “I bet [Anthony Broome] loved him when he was [at Central Michigan] and sorry to see him go when he left. He seemed to kind of be on that fast track to be one of those coaches that was going to be highly successful with a Power Five team. It obviously didn’t work out for him, and here we are.
“But this is a team that’s gonna probably be fundamentally sound. This is not a week where … we know they’re going to win. They better win, otherwise they’re in serious trouble. But this is the week where you have to figure out, first of all, your personnel. If guys aren’t getting it done and there is somebody else behind them that’s even close, then they need to get a shot. And I’m talking about right tackle, obviously, with [Michigan sophomore] Evan Link, who’s struggled mightily last week and in the first week but has shown some signs. He didn’t look the part physically or mentally against Texas, so if a [junior] Andrew Gentry or somebody like that is ready, then you get him in there.
“You gotta tackle better. You gotta play good, assignment football. You gotta know where you’re supposed to be and when. The communication needs to be better. And that’s where it all starts for me.”
