The hosts broke down what to watch for with Bowling Green’s offense against Michigan’s defense. Quarterback Connor Bazelak has faced the Wolverines before, last season at Indiana, and was sacked 7 times. Defensive line coach Mike Elston said this week that Michigan wants to get in the face of the quarterback even more than it has the first two weeks, which could make it a long day for Bazelak and the Falcons offense.
“Nasty up front,” Balas said of what he’s seen from Michigan’s defense through two games. “Somebody asked, ‘Is this the best interior defensive line that Michigan’s ever had?’ And, I think they have a chance to be. If you look at the depth and the skill from really three guys and then a fourth in [junior] Rayshaun Benny, who we haven’t seen as much of yet but who’s really made strides, they say. The problem is, he’s playing behind three guys who really have elite college potential.

“[Sophomore] Mason Graham — I’ve seen enough of him to know that he’s an outstanding defensive lineman, especially as a run stopped. [Sophomore] Kenneth Grant, we’re starting to see what people were talking about last year — the ‘gift from the football gods’ like [head coach] Jim Harbaugh called him — the way that he moves to get to the quarterback, in addition to being able to handle himself on the line of scrimmage and help build that run wall. Love what I’ve seen from them. And then [senior] Kris Jenkins has been double teamed quite a bit, and he’s still doing some things in there, is being disruptive. But that really opens things up for the guys on the edges, who have really gotten some good pressure in the first two weeks. … This defense has a chance to be really, really nasty — really scary.”
“It starts up front with those guys, too,” Broome said of Michigan’s defense. “I look at this Michigan defense … someone asked us, this might be one of the best front sevens they’ve ever had — maybe the best they’ve had under Jim Harbaugh. They’re athletic, they’re big, they’ve got the size, they’ve got the speed.”
