Michigan punter, kickoff specialist Tommy Doman enters NCAA transfer portal
Michigan Wolverines football senior punter Tommy Doman has entered the NCAA transfer portal, TheWolverine.com has learned. Doman spent four seasons at Michigan and has one year of eligibility remaining.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has appeared in 31 games for the Maize and Blue, serving as the starting punter, kickoff specialist and holder each of the last two seasons. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2021.
Doman punted 59 times in 2024, averaging 42.6 yards per attempt. Fifteen of his boots pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line, and 10 of them went for 50-plus yards.
Doman also kicked off 59 times this season, averaging 64.2 yards per attempt with 37 touchbacks.
The in-state product was a productive punter for Michigan over the last two seasons, though he did have his struggles in 2024, with some ups and downs. Special teams coordinator J.B. Brown, who is in his first year in the role, addressed those in a late-October press conference.
“We’re continuing to try to change the rhythm of that practice,” special teams coordinator J.B. Brown said on Wednesday. “He and [junior] Hudson [Hollenbeck] are competing in that practice every day and doing a good job. He’s practicing extremely well at a high level. We just need to translate it from State Street to Main Street now.

“… He works hard. He takes his craft very seriously. At the end of the day. We have full faith in him as a program. Everyone on the team has faith in him. The way he works and prepares, there’s no reason why he won’t.”
One of Doman’s best traits has been his ability to boom punts, ranking second in the Big Ten with a 4.17-second average hangtime in 2024. He led the conference in that category (4.33 seconds) in 2023. He is also stellar on kickoffs, ranking fifth nationally with 68 touchbacks in 2023.
Helping Michigan win a Big Ten title and the national championship in 2023, Doman averaged a career-best 44.3 yards per punt on 71 attempts, with 18 pins inside the 20-yard line and 12 kicks of 50-plus yards.
He played in four games in 2022, after seeing no game action in 2021.
