Michigan QB Cade McNamara undergoes knee surgery, provides update
Michigan Wolverines football senior quarterback Cade McNamara posted a photo on his Instagram story of him in a hospital bed with the caption “here we go!” earlier in the week, and now he’s expanded on the surgery he underwent with a follow-up post.
The quarterback revealed he played injured last season, as well, and that his injury early this year required an operation. McNamara was pictured in a wheelchair with a wrap and brace on his right leg, and looked in good spirits.
“I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone for the love and support,” the Michigan signal-caller wrote in the caption. “Turns out, I have been dealing with a serious injury since the middle of last season. Then after suffering another serious knee injury this season, my goal was to get back on the field as soon as possible. Sadly, I was unable to heal properly, but thanks to Dr. ElAttrache he was able to help me determine exactly what I needed to do to come back the best version of myself.
“What lies ahead is a lot of work and rehab, but I will come back better than ever!”

McNamara started all 14 games for Michigan in 2021, before opening the first outing of the 2022 campaign. He lost the starting job to sophomore J.J. McCarthy, however, and injured his right leg in the third game against UConn after coming off the bench.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said after the injury that McNamara would miss some weeks, but he didn’t indicate it would be a season-ending injury. Now, with McNamara confirming his surgery, it appears his campaign is done. Based on the wording of McNamara’s caption, he didn’t originally believe he’d need a procedure.
McNamara led Michigan to the 2021 Big Ten championship, the program’s first since 2004. He completed 210 of his 327 pass attempts for 2,576 yards with 15 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, along with 1 rushing touchdown. He was a third-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and media. The Maize and Blue appeared in the College Football Playoff and fell to Georgia, 34-11, in the Orange Bowl.
