Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore watches warm up during the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Michigan Wolverines football head coach Sherrone Moore held a press conference Tuesday afternoon, discussing his team around midway through fall camp ahead of the Aug. 31 opener against Fresno State. Moore likes where his squad is at heading into his first season at the helm.

“Camp is going phenomenal,” a fired up Moore said. “We’re in a really, really good place, getting callouses, as we like to say around here, and having a physical, physical camp. But also having fun, too. Competition is at an all-time high. Guys are not satisfied with [where they are], and we’re going to continue to do that.”

The biggest question with Michigan football ahead of the 2024 campaign is the quarterback position. The Wolverines are holding a competition to determine the starter, with junior Alex Orji, senior Davis Warren and graduate Jack Tuttle seemingly the top three contenders. Moore said the battle is ongoing.

“They’ve all been really good,” the Michigan coach said. “They’ve had their days that one guy’s been good, one guy’s been really good, one guy’s been better — so not a frontrunner. Really kind of all on an even plane right now, and we’ll see when we go through this week, next week and then game week.”

Later in the press conference, Moore reiterated that he doesn’t know when Michigan will announce a starter: “No. Could be the week of, could be the day of the game. We’ll see.”

The Wolverine’s Chris Balas reported that Tuttle was limited physically early in camp. Tuttle missed spring practices while recovering from an injury and has dealt with multiple physical ailments throughout his long journey in college football, which began at Utah in 2018, continued at Indiana from 2019-22 and will conclude with the Wolverines, whom he joined in 2023.

Moore was asked if Tuttle has been “available” throughout camp.

“Yeah, he’s been good,” Moore said, not getting into specifics. “He’s been good, but competition’s ongoing.”

Moore praised all of the Michigan quarterbacks and how they’re performing in practices.

“With all of them, you’ve seen them be mature, be leaders, be poised, make plays,” Moore said. “Really, it’s just that, just continuing to do that on a consistent basis. All of them have done that. All of them have made plays in their own right at every position.

“It’s gonna take time. It’s gonna take that week, it’s gonna take maybe that day to figure out who the guy is.

“But feel really good about that room. Feel really good, really confident. They’ve all made really good throws, they’ve all made plays with their legs, they’ve all done things to put themselves in a good position.”
