McCarthy discussed his leadership and how it’s evolved now that he’s entering his second season as Michigan’s starter.
“The biggest thing this offseason was just being more of a vocal leader,” the Wolverines quarterback said. “And really embracing holding people accountable and holding myself accountable. Just making sure that it’s the ‘win the day’ mentality and not just focusing on week one or week two or the national championship or anything like that. Day by day. Just keeping that reinforcement on the guys about winning the day, attacking daily, consistent actions that will put us in a positive direction.
“Obviously, just always growing in my craft and always growing with the chemistry with the guys, the O-linemen, getting more involved with the defense, understanding what they’re trying to do with us in certain sets. It’s been a lot, but it’s been a lot of fun.”
The Michigan signal-caller also discussed the differences between last year’s fall camp and this year.

“I’m always a person that strives for the path of most resistance, but it’s been the most fun in my entire life playing football right now,” McCarthy said. “Everything is clear; everyone knows what’s going on. Things are effortless right now with the defense and with the chemistry of the guys. The defense — I’ve been reading that defense for two, three years now. It’s been so much fun going against those guys. But it’s just been so much fun.”
Michigan has two proven, veteran wide receivers in graduate Cornelius Johnson and senior Roman Wilson. The question is who will step up behind them. McCarthy pointed to a guy he’s worked with for a long time, sophomore Tyler Morris, a teammate of his at La Grange Park (Ill.) Nazareth Academy, before listing off some other names.
“Tyler Morris — he’s going to make a big name for himself this year,” McCarthy proclaimed. “We’ve had that connection built since my sophomore year of high school. He’s going to do great things.”
