By the numbers: Michigan's record against the spread under Jim Harbaugh
Michigan Wolverines football has been a massive favorite in each of its first three games, against East Carolina (35.5 points), UNLV (38) and Bowling Green (40.5). The Maize and Blue have failed to cover the Vegas point spread in all three, though they’ve stayed undefeated with lopsided victories. U-M opened as a 31.5-point favorite for this weekend’s Big Ten opener against Rutgers, which is also undefeated at 3-0, but the line has since slid to 24 points.
The Wolverines’ inability to cover the point spread in nonconference play may not be an indicator of what will occur in the future now that the conference season is here. Since 2015, head coach Jim Harbaugh‘s first season, they were 13-16 against the spread (ATS) in nonconference contests entering the 2023 campaign (they’re now 13-19), but 38-30-2 against Big Ten opponents, according to TeamRankings.com.
Overall under Harbaugh, Michigan is 51-49-2 ATS, with a 29-26-1 record at home and 18-17-1 mark on the road. Michigan is also 44-40-2 ATS as a favorite and 7-9-0 as an underdog.
