No. 5 Michigan Wolverines football will play No. 10 Penn State in front of more than 110,000 fans that are being highly encouraged to wear maize for the program’s annual ‘maize out’ game. The team, though, will be sporting blue jerseys with blue pants along with white gloves.

The program announced its combination Friday afternoon via social media.

Answering six key questions before Michigan football takes on Penn State

This marks just the fourth time that Michigan will wear blue pants at home. The first came against Penn State in 2014, an 18-13 U-M victory under the lights. The second was last year’s ‘maize out’ game against Washington, a 31-10 win, also a night game. And the third was a 42-27 rivalry game victory over Ohio State last November.

Michigan has worn blue pants just eight times in program history. It donned blue pants six times last season — in the game against the Huskies, a 38-17 triumph at Wisconsin, a 59-18 win at Maryland, a 42-27 beatdown of Ohio State, a 42-3 drubbing of Iowa in the Big Ten championship game and a 34-11 loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl. It also sported the look in a 27-14 win over Iowa Oct. 1.

Michigan festivities planned for showdown with Penn State

Not only is Saturday’s tilt a top-10 matchup, but Michigan has all sorts of festivities planned for the event. Fans are encouraged to wear maize and will be given pom-poms. There will be a flyover of Air Force F-16’s from the 112th Fighter Squadron of the 180th Fighter Wing.

The 1997 national championship team will be honored during the first quarter. Charles Woodson will be recognized for the 25th anniversary of his Heisman Trophy season. Aidan Hutchinson will also be recognized for winning the 2021 Lott Impact Trophy.

Michigan’s home-field advantage

The Maize and Blue have fared extremely well at home overall under eighth-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, and haven’t dropped a game inside the friendly confines of The Big House since the shortened 2020 campaign’s final game — a 27-17 loss to Penn State with no fans in the stands.

Outside of the 2020 season, which saw no fans allowed inside Big Ten stadiums, Michigan is 37-5 in home games during the Harbaugh era. The Wolverines haven’t lost to any team other than Ohio State (three times) and Michigan State (twice) on Main Street under the head coach. Michigan has won its last 11, and 24 of 25, home tilts with spectators allowed
