Michigan Wolverines football safety Rod Moore tore his ACL in March 2024 and has had a long recovery process that included two surgeries and strenuous rehab. He’s back running on ground now, though, for the first time in 14 months, he revealed in a social media post Tuesday (May 13).

“First time running in 14 months on ground,” Moore wrote. “Thank you, God.”

A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023, Moore was named a 2025 way-too-early All-American by On3. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore revealed on the ‘In The Trenches’ podcast April 23 that Moore is on the mend.

“Rod’s trending in a super positive direction,” Moore revealed. “It feels like he’s going to be in a great place just for summer workouts, and be working his way into fall camp.”

Sherrone Moore hadn’t revealed publicly that Rod Moore went through a second surgery until he discussed it in April.

“So excited, man,” the Michigan coach said of Moore’s return. “A guy who went through so much, went through the whole year, sat out and was a leader off the field and what he did, how he’s been now.

“He’s felt the best he’s ever felt, because he had to have another surgery. That really took care of the rest of it. He’s felt the best he’s ever felt. He ran, and he’s in a good place.”

Moore appeared in 12 games with 11 starts in 2023. He logged 38 tackles, including 1 for loss, and 2 interceptions, helping Michigan win the national championship and Big Ten title with a perfect 15-0 record. One of his two picks was the game-sealing interception to take down Ohio State.

The Dayton, Ohio, native led Michigan in interceptions as a sophomore in 2022, with the ballhawk’s 4 picks standing as the most by a U-M safety since Dewayne Patmon had an identical number in 1998. The former three-star recruit recorded 71 tackles with 1.5 behind the line of scrimmage for the 2022 campaign.

As a freshman the prior year, Moore played in 11 games with four starts. His first career start came when he finished with 6 tackles in a 21-17 win at Penn State. He tied for the team’s lead with 9 tackles in a 42-27 victory over Ohio State at The Big House.

Michigan’s summer training cycle begins in June, ahead of fall camp. The Wolverines open the season with an August 30 clash against New Mexico at The Big House.
