Salary, contract details revealed for Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey
Michigan Wolverines football head coach Sherrone Moore replaced offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell with Chip Lindsey. The 50-year-old Lindsey spent the last two seasons at North Carolina under Mack Brown, who was fired at the end of the regular season.
Lindsey’s contract details have come to light through a Freedom of Information Act request by The Detroit Free Press. Lindsey signed a three-year contact with Michigan, worth $4.5 million in base salary. He will also collect a $60,000 signing bonus.
Campbell made $950,000 in his lone season as Michigan’s offensive coordinator. The Wolverines currently sit 111th nationally with 22.3 points per game. Tight ends coach Steve Casula will call offensive plays during the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama.
Lindsey will earn $1.4 million in 2025, $1.5 million in 2026 and $1.6 million in 2027. The term of the contract begins Dec. 21, 2024.
The assistant coach can also make significant money via bonuses.
• If Michigan finishes top four in offense in the Big Ten — $100,000
• If Michigan finishes top 15 in offense in the country — $100,000
• For every victory beyond the ninth of the season, not including the Big Ten championship and limited at $200,000 — $50,000

Lindsey has already begun work with the Michigan program, even though he won’t call plays during the bowl game.
Michigan is compensating its coordinators at a high level. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was the second-highest paid assistant coach in college football in 2024, raking in $2.3 million. Only LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker ($2.5 million) made more.
Moore commented on the Lindsey hire earlier this month.
“Coach Lindsey is an innovative offensive mind who likes to run and pass the ball with great efficiency and balance,” the Michigan coach said in a statement. “After spending a considerable amount of time together, I knew that Chip was the right fit to coordinate our offense. We share the same philosophy regarding structure, scheme and player development, and I know his leadership of the offense will place our players in the best position to succeed. We are excited to have Chip, Cecily and their children join our University of Michigan and Michigan Football family.”
“I am excited to join Coach Moore’s staff at the University of Michigan,” Lindsey added in his own statement. “We share the same vision for offensive football and Coach Moore has assembled an outstanding staff that is aligned in its objectives to help our players succeed. I look forward to leading and serving the young men in this program while helping them achieve their goals on and off the football field. My family and I are excited to join the Michigan family. Go Blue!”
