Michigan Wolverines football has lost nine transfers out of the program this offseason — one of them being defensive back Sammy Faustin, who has found a new home. He announced his commitment to UMass on his Twitter account.

At UMass, Faustin will be reunited with former Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown, who’s now the head coach of the Minutemen. Brown was his primary recruiter, while former safeties coach Brian Smith, now the defensive coordinator at Rice, was the secondary coach in his recruitment. Former Michigan cornerback George Johnson also transferred to UMass this offseason.

Brown coached the Wolverines’ defense from 2016-20 and saw his first five units finish top 11 nationally in total defense, before the 2020 group ranked 84th and he was let go.

Faustin was not with the Michigan team in 2021 due to medical reasons, though he did remain at school and on medical aid.

The Naples, Fla., native never made much of an impact at Michigan. He redshirted and did not see game action in his freshman year of 2018, before appearing in nine games on special teams and three at defensive back in 2019. That year, he tallied two tackles. In 2020, he saw action in one contest and registered one tackle. In his final season of playing at Michigan (2020), he made the switch from safety to cornerback.

A three-star recruit on the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Faustin was slotted as the No. 529 overall player, No. 43 safety and No. 88 standout in the state of Florida in the class of 2018. He committed to Michigan Aug. 2, 2017.

Faustin also received offers out of high school from Appalachian State, Arizona, East Carolina, Florida International, Georgia Southern, Iowa State, Kentucky, Maryland, NC State, Purdue, UCF, USF, Virginia and Western Kentucky.

Faustin has at least two more seasons of eligibility remaining at his next destination, though he could potentially receive a waiver to get a medical hardship for the 2021 campaign.

All told, Michigan has lost nine players to the transfer portal since the 2021 season concluded, with the other eight being quarterback Dan Villari (Syracuse), offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga (Minnesota), cornerback Darion Green-Warren (Nevada), safety Jordan Morant (Duke), defensive lineman Jack Stewart (UConn), cornerback George Johnson (UMass), cornerback Andre Seldon (New Mexico State) and linebacker Anthony Solomon (Arizona).
