Michigan Wolverines football head coach Sherrone Moore and the university have agreed to and signed a contract. He was previously working under a memorandum of understanding signed Jan. 26, when he was officially hired to replace Jim Harbaugh, who departed for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Moore is entering his third game as U-M’s head coach, with his team having beaten Fresno State, 30-10, and lost to Texas, 31-12, to kick off the year.
Moore was one of very few college head coaches to be working under a memorandum of understanding and not a contract. The MOU he signed in January read that the “offer is contingent upon executing a full employment agreement within 90 days of signing,” but that deadline passed April 25.
“These things take time, the contracts,” athletic director Warde Manuel said on the ‘Conqur’ing Heroes’ podcast last week.
Manuel insisted Michigan was close to finalizing the deal with Moore, and now that process is complete, with Moore and university leadership making a Wednesday morning announcement.
“Our University of Michigan administration led by President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel has been tremendous throughout this process, and I am excited to have this full contract completed. Their support for our team is greatly appreciated, and all three of us are aligned in our goals for this football program.

“We want the attention to be on the players that work so hard and represent this team and university at the highest level. All of my focus is and always will be centered on the mental, physical and spiritual development of the young men that suit up to play for Michigan. Go Blue!”
“We are excited to announce that the full contract for University of Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore has been signed by all parties,” Ono and Manuel said in a joint statement. “He is a proven leader and has been a great ambassador during his seven-plus years representing Michigan. Our university and athletic department leadership is behind Coach Moore, his coaching staff and the great student-athletes that compete on the field and in the classroom. We are excited to see our team take the field this Saturday against Arkansas State.”
At the time the MOU was signed, Moore was set to begin a five-year contract with a scheduled annual salary of $6 million per year, plus incentives that could total up to $3.5 million. Details of the newly-signed contract have yet to be announced.
