Michigan Wolverines football tight ends coach Steve Casula earned a bigger role at the end of the 2024 season and will carry a more prominent title in his second season as an assistant coach with the program in 2025.

Casula was Michigan’s interim offensive coordinator and play-caller during a 19-13 win over Alabama in the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl, after head coach Sherrone Moore fired coordinator Kirk Campbell immediately following a 7-5 regular season.

According to MLive, which obtained a copy of a new contract for Casula, the 37-year-old has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator this offseason. He will be the next in command on an offensive unit led by new coordinator Chip Lindsey, who spent the previous two seasons in the same role at North Carolina. Lindsey is also Michigan’s quarterbacks coach.

Casula will collect $500,000 annually under his new deal, a 25-percent pay bump from what he was originally set to make in 2025.

Casula’s newly-signed contract is a two-year deal beginning in 2025.

Casula has coordinator experience beyond just the one game for Michigan in 2024. He was the offensive coordinator at Davenport from 2014-16, Ferris State from 2017-18 and, most recently, at Massachusetts — while also coaching quarterbacks — from 2022-23. Casula was an analyst at Michigan from 2019-21, then made his stop at UMass before returning to Ann Arbor in 2023.

Michigan passed for 75 yards (1 touchdown, 1 interception) and rushed for 115 in the victory over Alabama, during which Casula called plays. The Wolverines leaned on their defense to gut out the hard-fought win, especially after starting quarterback Davis Warren was injured in the third quarter.

MLive uncovered new contracts that include pay bumps for other Michigan assistant coaches, as well. Running backs coach and run game coordinator Tony Alford went from $850,000 to $900,000 in 2025 as part of a new three-year contract. Defensive line coach Lou Esposito has been moved to a salary of $600,000 from $500,000 in the first year of a new two-year deal.

Wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator Ron Bellamy, defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator LaMar Morgan and offensive line coach Grant Newsome received contract extensions through the 2026 season but didn’t get pay raises.

Moore made only one change to his assistant coaching staff this offseason — replacing Campbell with Lindsey. There’s year-over-year continuity at all other positions.

He extended the aforementioned six assistants and kept the rest on their current deals.
