Michigan Wolverines football is set to host TCU safety transfer Jamel Johnson on a visit this week, according to ESPN.com’s Max Olson. Per Olson, Johnson is visiting Louisville Wednesday and will also see Ole Miss this week.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder played two years at TCU (2023-24) and has a pair of seasons of eligibility remaining. He appeared in 22 games with 12 starts.

The Arlington, Texas, native is the No. 170 overall player and No. 19 safety in the NCAA transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Johnson entered the portal Dec. 4.

Johnson started all 12 regular-season games for the 8-4 Horned Frogs this regular season. He totaled 71 tackles, including 2 stops for loss, 3 pass breakups and a forced fumble.

PFF gave Johnson a 64.5 coverage rating in 2024, which ranks 21st among Big 12 safeties with 200-plus snaps. According to the analytics site, he allowed 19 receptions for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns on 32 targets.

“Jamel is a young player that’s very talented,” TCU head coach Sonny Dykes said before the season on why Johnson earned a starting role. “I think Jamel has learned now to focus on daily improvement.

“I love the way he played in fall camp; he was always around the football. To me, when you look at guys that made plays in the secondary, he was always making plays. He’s just one of those guys that day in and day out was making competitive plays on the ball, was in the right spot, tackled well, did all the things that safeties got to do and still learning to communicate at the level he’s got to communicate at.”

As a true freshman in 2023, the Michigan transfer target played in 10 games, registering 19 tackles with 1 for loss.

A product of Arlington (Texas) Seguin, Johnson was a threre-star recruit in the 2023 class. He was the No. 406 overall player and No. 39 safety in the country.

Michigan is set to lose both of its starting safeties from the 2024 team in graduates Quinten Johnson and Makari Paige. While senior Rod Moore — who’s missed the entire season to this point with an ACL injury — may return, the Wolverines don’t have many other safeties with experience. Sophomore Brandyn Hillman and freshman Mason Curtis have received some playing time at the position, however. Michigan brought in Arkansas safety transfer Tevis Metcalf on a visit over the weekend, showing its desire to add talent on the back end of the defense.
