Where Michigan football portal additions rank in On3 Industry transfer rankings

Michigan Wolverines football sits No. 43 in the country in On3’s Team Transfer Portal Rankings for the 2024 offseason, with nine scholarship players joining the program and 15 headed out.

Here’s a look at where each addition stands in the On3 Industry transfer portal top players list, which averages scores from On3, 247Sports and Rivals, “offering a unique insight into athlete movements.”

LB Jaishawn Barham: No. 52 overall, No. 2 linebacker

Previous school: Maryland

Breakdown: Barham is expected to start at inside linebacker alongside junior Ernest Hausmann, who transferred to Michigan ahead of the 2023 campaign. He’s not just the Wolverines’ top transfer according to the industry rankings, but he has the chance to become one of the team’s best players right away.

Hausmann registered 59 tackles and 4 sacks as a freshman in 2022, before recording 37 tackles and 3 sacks in 10 games in 2023. He joined the Wolverines in December and stood out during spring practices.

OL Josh Priebe: No. 917 overall, No. 71 interior offensive lineman

Previous school: Northwestern

Breakdown: Priebe ranks behind former Michigan offensive lineman Amir Herring — the No. 23 interior offensive lineman who transferred this offseason — despite Herring playing only 1 offensive snap in one-year college career. Priebe, meanwhile, has logged 1,785 offensive snaps in four seasons at Northwestern and earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023. Those facts, and that he’s a projected starter at left guard for the Maize and Blue, suggest that Priebe is likely being undervalued.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Niles, Mich., native was a team captain for the Wildcats last season. He appeared in 36 games with 29 starts during his career in Evanston.

S Jaden Mangham, No. 332 overall, No. 30 safety

Previous school: Michigan State

Breakdown: Mangham was one of nine players on a 4-8 Michigan State team to earn All-Big Ten honors last season, receiving an honorable mention nod. Last season, he led the squad with 4 interceptions, adding 3 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery and 53 total tackles.

DB Ricky Johnson: No. 389 overall, No. 37 safety

Previous school: UNLV

Breakdown: While Johnson is listed as a safety, he’s spent most of his career as a cornerback and is expected to compete there at Michigan.

Walker has played in 30 career games with 11 starts, totaling 935 defensive snaps. In 2023, he saw time in 12 outings with seven starts but did not take the field in the team’s loss to Michigan in December. Last year, Johnson tallied 36 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 7 pass breakups.

CB Aamir Hall: No. 432 overall, No. 51 cornerback

Previous school: Albany

Breakdown: Hall is at his third school, after playing at the FCS level for four seasons — 2023 at Albany and 2020-22 at Richmond. He has one season of eligibility remaining and is set to compete for one of Michigan’s starting cornerback jobs, after earning FCS All-American honors by Sports Illustrated in 2023 and helping the Great Danes reach the FCS semifinals.

Hall ranked tied ninth among FCS cornerbacks with an 85.7 overall PFF rating (minimum 100 snaps) and seventh among the same group in coverage grade (88.3) last season. He accumulated 26 tackles, 4 interceptions, 13 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble on the campaign.

WR C.J. Charleston: No. 1,322 overall, No. 197 wide receiver

Previous school: Youngstown State

Breakdown: The 6-foot-0, 190-pounder spent five seasons at Youngstown State but still has two seasons of eligibility left, since 2020 was a free year and he missed the 2022 campaign with an Achilles injury. He reeled in 33 receptions (third on his team) for 503 yards (also third) and 4 touchdowns (tied second) in 2023 for the Penguins, who compete at the FCS level.

K Dominic Zvada: No, 2,897 overall, No. 28 kicker

Previous school: Arkansas State

Breakdown: Zvada is ranked No. 28 among transfer portal kickers per the industry ranking but is the third-best to transfer this offseason according to both On3 and 247Sports. He’s slated to make a big impact this fall, projected as the team’s starting placekicker.

Zvada connected on 17 of his 22 boots with a 53-yard long for the Red Wolves last year. In two seasons at Arkansas State, he’s 8 of 10 on attempts on 40-plus yards. He nailed 17 of his 18 overall kicks in 2022.

WR Amorion Walker: Unranked

Previous school: Ole Miss

Breakdown: Walker spent the last two seasons at Michigan, before transferring to Ole Miss in January. He lasted one semester in Oxford and then transferred back to Michigan — a rare boomerang transfer. Walker also switched position along with his return to Ann Arbor, going from cornerback to wide receiver (where he started his career in 2022), which is likely the reason why he’s not ranked.

S Wesley Walker: Unranked

Previous school: Louisville

Breakdown: Walker is another Michigan player who’s transferred multiple times this offseason, spending the spring at Louisville after playing two seasons at Tennessee (2022-23) and three at Georgia Tech (2019-21). He found a home in Ann Arbor for his final year of eligibility.

Walker brings a ton of experience to the Wolverines’ secondary, having played in 46 career games with 25 starts. He’s accumulated 185 tackles, 11 stops for loss, 2 sacks, 1 interception, 12 pass breakups and 3 forced fumbles. He finished fourth on Tennessee with 54 tackles last season, playing in 10 games before missing the final two with injury.
