Two Michigan juniors — cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackle Mason Graham — have been tabbed to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list for the nation’s top defensive player. Seventy five players from 56 schools in the FBS made the list.

Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome has been named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Board of Trustees and picked as the chairman of the AFCA Assistant Coaches Committee. At 27 years old, Newsome — a former Michigan offensive lineman — is the youngest member of the AFCA board.

“Assistant coaches are some of the most important people in a football program,” AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl said in a statement. “With the landscape of college football ever-changing and the need for a fresh perspective for the AFCA Board of Trustees, we are excited to announce the addition of Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome as an ex officio member and chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee.”

From a release: “Newsome joins a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the organization. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. Members of the AFCA Board of Trustees include president Jeff McMartin of Central College, first vice-president Bobby Hauck of the University of Montana, second vice-president Neal Brown of West Virginia University and third vice-president Jim Catanzaro of Lake Forest College.”

Quote Of The Day

“You’re not worth a grain of salt if you don’t feel pressure as a coach every year, no matter where you’re at. Do you want to be better than that? Sure, you do. But sometimes what you want is not always what you get. There are different opponents, different offenses than what they’ve had. And everything fits just right when you end up being No. 1.”
