Michigan Wolverines football saw graduate Mike Sainristil excel as a defensive back in 2022, after playing wide receiver his first three seasons in college. Head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for moving players around and finding the right position for them.

Sophomore-to-be wide receiver Amorion Walker may be the next notable one in line to being either a two-way player or one who switched positions, with the Wolverines having worked him on defense at times last season.

Walker appeared in six games as a freshman, totaling 38 offensive snaps and 6 defensive snaps. He practiced at both, after joining the program with the impression that he’d play offense.

“Coming into Michigan, I thought I was going to play receiver. That’s what I primarily was [recruited] for, but I’m starting to like DB a lot, too,” Walker told TheWolverine.com at the Fiesta Bowl. “I’m gonna have to pick one eventually, or play a little bit of both but one primarily. I like to score touchdowns, but defense is fun, too. I guess I’ll figure it out.”

Michigan’s upcoming spring practices — which begin Feb. 20 and conclude with an April 1 scrimmage — could be big opportunities for Walker and the coaching staff to figure out what his next step will be.

During winter conditioning this week, Walker ran a 6.10-second three-cone drill, as documented on Johnson’s Instagram account.

Walker’s time would be the fastest in the history of the NFL Draft Scouting Combine. Former Oklahoma defensive back Jordan Thomas set the record with a 6.28-second mark back in 2018. It’s important to note that Walker’s was hand timed, but the acceleration and short-area quickness in the video is extremely impressive.

Walker’s athleticism could be used on either side of the ball. Michigan lost wide receiver Ronnie Bell to the NFL, but it also has a vacancy at the starting cornerback spot opposite sophomore Will Johnson.

“I’m a big guy, so I can cover a lot of space,” Walker said of his strengths on defense. “I feel like I can run with anybody, and [play] a lot of bump and run [coverage].

“As far as offense, same thing — a lot of speed. Can take the top off, get in the crevices when I need to.

Either way, he’s a potential breakout impact player for Michigan.

“Just being me. Keep being me,” Walker said of the key to him making a bigger impact in 2023. “That’s what’s going to really push me forward, being myself, knowing what I can do and playing how I can play.”
