Michigan golfer Monet Chun makes cut at U.S. Women's Open
Michigan Wolverines women’s golf standout Monet Chun has made it to the weekend. The senior-to-be made the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach after two strong rounds Thursday and Friday.
Chun, who sat tied for 26th after two rounds, fired a 1-over 73 to climb the leaderboard on Friday (two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys). That came after posting a 2-over 74 on Thursday (three birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey).
She’s Michigan’s first amateur to make a weekend cut at an LPGA and major event. Chun, a Richmond Hills, Ontario, native, is the first Wolverine overall to advance to the weekend at the U.S. Open since 1995. Elaine Crosby, an 11-time U.S. Open participant, did so that year. Crosby made the cut five times at the event.
Chun is one of four amateurs to be playing the weekend at Pebble Beach, with Aine Donegan (Ireland), Benedetta Moresco (University of Alabama) and Amari Avery (University of Southern California) being the others.
Chun said before the tournament that she didn’t set any specific goals pertaining to her score.
“I think once I get caught up in score, it’s just going to be a lot in my head,” she said, per Golf Canada. “So right now, I’m just playing to the best of my abilities and see where my game is at this point and try to make a goal set on that.”
Chun teed off for her third round on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. ET.
The Michigan golfer is looking forward to one day turning professional, but is enjoying her time in Ann Arbor and as an amateur in the meantime.

“Obviously, I would love to turn pro but that won’t be until after I graduate school,” Chun said. “So just a good test.”
Monet won the 2022 Big Ten individual title (Michigan’s second ever), helping the Maize and Blue to their first ever Big Ten crown. She then won the 2022 Canadian Women’s Amateur to earn an invitation to the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur, where she finished as the runner-up and earned her U.S. Women’s Open invite.
Earlier this year, the Michigan standout competed in the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She advanced out of a 36-hole cut to play the final round and tied for 14th.
Chun is a three-time all-Big Ten honoree, including having become the first Michigan freshman to receive first-team honors in 2021. She was the conference’s freshman of the year that season. At the 2022 Big Ten Championship, she recorded two of the Wolverines’ five total sub-par scores.
