Michigan hockey scored three first-period goals to get out to a 3-0 lead over Penn State, and held off the Nittany Lions, who scored two third-period goals, to hang onto the 3-2 win.

Sophomore netminder Erik Portillo was outstanding between the pipes for U-M, turning aside 28 of the 30 shots that he faced from the visiting Nittany Lions to move to 17-6-1 on the year. Michigan’s goals were scored by Luke Hughes, Matty Beniers and Kent Johnson.

The fourth-ranked Wolverines are now 8-5 in conference play and 16-6-1 overall. They’ll face Penn State at Yost Ice Arena once again tonight, with faceoff set for 7 p.m. ET and the stream on Big Ten Network Plus.

Michigan wrestling opened Big Ten play with a dominant 29-8 win over No. 7 Ohio State in Columbus Friday night. The Wolverines took eight matches, including the first three and the final four, to cruise to victory.

Logan Massa (174 pounds) and Myles Amine (184) earned back-to-back top-10 wins; Massa used a third-period rally to beat No. 7 Ethan Smith, while Amine defeated No. 7 Kaleb Romero, 3-1, in overtime.

Nick Suriano (125) and Dylan Ragusin (133) opened the dual with major decisions, while Mason Parris (Hwt) picked up a first-period pin — his seventh bonus win this season — to close it out.

The Michigan football Twitter account posted a graphic highlighting the Wolverines’ edge defender duo from 2021. Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo were stellar, combining for a program-record 25 sacks. Hutchinson was the Heisman Memorial Trophy runner-up, a consensus first-team All-American and the Big Ten MVP as voted on by the conference’s head coaches. Meanwhile, Ojabo was a second-team All-American, first-team All-Big Ten and was named the team’s most improved player of the year.

Both are projected to be first-round NFL Draft picks in April. Barring an injury or something crazy at the combine in February, Hutchinson is a near-lock to be selected top three by one of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions or Houston Texans. Ojabo is projected to go mid- to late-first-round, but will still be a valuable piece for an NFL organization after departing college following his third season in a winged helmet.

Quote Of The Day

“Harbaugh acknowledged him in front of the whole camp, which meant a lot to him and his dad. I know for sure that Michigan is in his top group. His family moved here from Chicagoland. They didn’t grow up Iowa or Iowa State fans. Half of the kids here go to one or the other. He has an affinity towards Michigan because of the academic prestige and tradition. He loves Aidan Hutchinson — for good reason. He aspires to be that kind of guy. There are a lot of things going for Michigan.”
