Newsstand: Former Michigan standout Quinn Hughes to replace injured Charlie McAvoy for Team USA

Tweets Of The Day
Team USA will take on Canada on Thursday night a rematch of Saturday night’s 3-1 win, with the inaugural Four Nations Face-Off championship on the line.
Defenseman Charlie McAvoy, a member of the Boston Bruins, is out with an upper body injury, and he’s set to be replaced by former Michigan star and current Vancouver Canucks standout Quinn Hughes, according to head coach Mike Sullivan.
“Hughes was one of the original six players named to the U.S. roster in June but bowed out due to an oblique injury,” wrote Michael Russo of The Athletic. “It’s unclear if he’ll be allowed to play in the final if there are no other injuries or illnesses, Sullivan said.”
Hughes ranks tied second in points among NHL defensemen with 59. He scored 62 points (10 goals, 52 assists) during his 69-game Michigan career. He led all Big Ten defensemen in points and assists during his sophomore season in 2018-19, before heading to the professional ranks.
CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein said on a show this week that he believes Michigan will win the Big Ten regular season championship. Along with that, the insider said head coach Dusty May
“I think it’s Michigan, and I think we can start to say right now that, when you look at the makeup of this conference if we’re looking at a Big Ten Coach of the Year race, I think I would say Dusty May 1, Greg Gard 2.
And you look at the two dynamics in which those two coaches took over. Dusty May takes the Michigan job, off a team that wins eight games under Juwan Howard, builds a completely different roster and now has Michigan in position to be in position to win a Big Ten regular season title.
“What about Greg Gard, meanwhile? Greg Gard loses Chucky Hepburn to Louisville, loses AJ Storr to Kansas — and remember, that was a Wisconsin team that was a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament — and the Badgers are significantly better.

“Those two coaches, to me, at the top of the Big Ten Coach of the Year race. Kevin Willard from Marlyand, Mick Cronin from UCLA not that far behind.”

“We’ve had to challenge him a few days not to wait until next year. We need him this year. There’s gonna be a game when we’re gonna need him to come in and help us win a possession, help us win a couple possessions, and that’s the importance of being on a team.”
