Tweets Of The Day

Ahead of Michigan’s appearance in the Big Ten Tournament final against Michigan State (Saturday, March 23), the conference announced its awards for the 2024 season. U-M sophomore forward Gavin Brindley — the No. 34 overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2023 NHL Draft — was named Big Ten Player of the Year.

From Michigan’s press release:
Joining Brindley as a first-team selection are Rutger McGroarty and Seamus Casey, as the Wolverines make up half of the selections. Dylan Duke captured second-team honors while T.J. Hughes and Frank Nazar III earned honorable mention nods. Jacob Truscott is Michigan’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Brindley also captured the Big Ten Scoring Champion title with 29 points scored against conference opponents in 23 games. He is fifth Wolverine to accomplish the feat, joining Matty Beniers (2022), Cooper Marody (2018), Kyle Connor (2016) and Zach Hyman (2014).

Michigan’s three first-team selections are the most since 2016 when the Wolverines had four with Connor, JT Compher, Tyler Motte and Zach Werenski.

Brindley has 51 points in 36 games, averaging 1.42 points per game. He has a team-best 24 goals, 27 assists, is +19, while collecting at least one point in 27 games with 15 multiple-point games. Brindley has 18 points on the nation’s top power play, including six goals and adds 23 blocked shots. The Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick was an honorable mention selection last year. Brindley is the second Wolverine to be named B1G Player of the Year joining Kyle Connor (2016). Six other players have been finalists for the award.

Quote Of The Day

“If you’re drafting a guy at No. 4, let alone moving up to No. 4, you want to be absolutely wowed like, ‘This guy is incredible with no doubts.’ It would be a leap of faith, and how do you say that about a guy who just went undefeated in college? Believe me, you say it. McCarthy to the Vikings would really bring the house down. I think he’s the most interesting player, most interesting pick by one of the most interesting teams right now. I can’t help it, the contagious excitement of mock drafts is real.”

— NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt reacting to Daniel Jeremiah’s mock draft that projected the Minnesota Vikings to trade up to No. 4 overall and select Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy
