Newsstand: Michigan offensive line named semifinalist for Joe Moore Award
Tweets Of The Day
Heading into the 2022 season, Michigan set the goal of becoming the first-ever back-to-back winner of the Joe Moore Award. That goal is still in play, with the award committee naming the Wolverines one of nine semifinalists for the honor, which is presented annually to the nation’s top offensive line. U-M is joined by Air Force, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, Ole Miss, USC and UCLA.
Michigan is averaging 5.2 yards per carry (seventh nationally). The Wolverines have allowed only 12 sacks and 44 total tackles for loss.
Michigan football (10-0, 7-0 B1G) opened the College Football Playoff rankings reveal a few weeks back as the No. 5 team in the nation before being elevated to 3rd last week. The latest batch of rankings were released on Tuesday night with the Wolverines staying at No. 3.
Georgia leads the way as the No. 1 team in the land, followed by Ohio State at No. 2, U-M at No. 3 and TCU bringing up the rear at No. 4. Tennessee and LSU are next in line at spots 5 and 6, respectively.

The way things are set up now, Michigan and Ohio State are essentially playing a CFP quarterfinal game when the two teams meet on Nov. 26 in Columbus. A one-loss OSU team might have a better chance at a playoff spot than one-loss Michigan, but that might depend on how the Buckeyes’ game against Notre Dame ages. The Irish taking down USC on Nov. 26 opens up a door on a few levels.
Michigan associate head coach Biff Poggi — head coach Jim Harbaugh’s right-hand man — has been hired to be the next head coach at Charlotte. According to The Athletic‘s Bruce Feldman, Poggi will stay on until the conclusion of the U-M season.
“Biff has been a tremendous asset to our University of Michigan Football program, providing support and mentorship to our coaching staff and players,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “He has a great football mind, knows how to prepare a team during the week and on game day, and is a coach that aims to change the lives of his players in a positive way. Biff is a trusted agent and known friend, and I know that his leadership and ability to develop a team-first culture will be a huge asset to the Charlotte 49ers.”

“Obviously, Michigan has a prestigious football program. But it’s everything outside of that. They are a great academic school. I can get a great degree and also go pro.”
