At first, it appeared that Michigan was going to wait until the conclusion of the Harbaugh/NCAA situation, which could last until next offseason with a hearing. But now, per Balas, it appears a new Harbaugh contract could get done sooner than later.
“It’s almost a case of the squeaky wheel gets the oil,” Balas said. “Because it has gotten back to the Michigan administration, and I think they are hell bent on getting this thing done — I know they are, in fact. And I know that the wheels are in motion here to get this thing done sooner than later. I fully expect Jim Harbaugh to be the highest paid coach in the Big Ten, or right there with [Ohio State’s] Ryan Day, when this is all said and done, based on what my sources are telling me.

“Which is absolutely the way this thing should be, given that he has done for the University of Michigan, with not just prestige … everybody says that athletics is the front door to a university, and you can kinda see it. But at the same time, the revenue that he’s brought in and propping the school up like he has, there’s no reason to delay. Even if he were thinking about flirting with the NFL, give him a reason not to, let him know that he is wanted here. And I know that is firmly in motion at this point.”
Harbaugh is currently not in the top 10 of the highest paid coaches in college football, despite leading Michigan to back to back Big Ten championships and College Football Playoff appearances.
