Junior Alex Orji and senior Davis Warren are the two Michigan quarterbacks receiving the most praise at this point in fall camp, and graduate Jack Tuttle being limited with an injury is certainly a potential factor in that. However, Warren has been lauded for his passing, and so has Orji in how he’s improved in that area.

“It’s still early, obviously,” Sayfie said.

“It is,” Balas replied. “Nobody is talking about Jack Tuttle. Jack Tuttle’s been limited. You can read about that in our Inside The Fort today. A lot of people said he had the best summer of the three, especially throwing the ball. And [head coach] Sherrone Moore raved about him at Big Ten Media Days.

“But it’s a good thing, guys, that all three guys are getting reps if Tuttle gets back and the cream rises to the top. But as I’ve said many times, if you can get Alex Orji to the point where he’s a consistent passer, you can have an outstanding quarterback.

“I’ve always loved a dual-threat quarterback. Michigan was destroyed by dual-threat quarterbacks for years, and you’re thinking, ‘Man, why can’t we get a guy like that?’ And so on and so forth. And J.J. McCarthy was a guy like that. But Alex Orji would be even more that, because they would use him to run even more — maybe even the way that they used Denard Robinson. He’s certainly not as explosive as Denard Robinson — nobody is — but that is his forte.

“Looking forward to seeing how it plays out, fellas, but hearing lots of positives about the offense.”
