TheWolverine.com‘s Clayton Sayfie, Chris Balas and Anthony Broome break down the latest surrounding Michigan Wolverines football and basketball on this podcast episode. We break down the biggest things we want to learn during Michigan’s spring football practices, linebackers coach George Helow mutually parting ways with the program and basketball’s loss to Wisconsin and upcoming game with Michigan State.
The discussion began with pre-spring ball storylines.
“For me, it’s finding out how much more you can put on your quarterback’s plate,” Broome said of what he wants to learn about Michigan spring ball. “Last year was kind of retro-fitting J.J. McCarthy’s skill set into the confines of what Michigan’s offense has been the last few years, which worked and he was great. When the shackles came off late in the year, because they had to, I think you saw a little bit more of a guy who can be a bit more of a dual threat.”
“I want to see more of how [junior running back] Blake Corum and [sophomore] Donovan Edwards coexist and get them on the field at the same time,” Balas said. “I know that Donovan said he was hoping for more of a 50-50 split in carries. At the same time, there are other things you can do. [Position coach] Mike Hart said Donovan Edwards could be one of the best slot receivers in the country if he played there full time. Why not get these guys on the field at the same time? To me, that makes perfect sense.”
The conversation flipped to the Michigan defense, which has some questions to answer, too. We discussed what Michigan has to replace on the defensive line, which seems to be a recurring storyline year after year.
“Our [senior editor] John Borton was asking [former Michigan defensive tackle] Mazi Smith at Big Ten Media Days last July, and he said, ‘How do you feel like you guys can replace that production from those guys [you lost]?’ And he said, ‘Man, we’ve been getting those questions every single year.’ Every year, Michigan pumps out these NFL talents across the defensive line, and he said, ‘We’ve answered the bell every time.’ And he was right. They were a very good defensive line this past year. … They had more sacks last year than they did the year before.”
