Newsstand: Michigan to honor Dametrius 'Meechie' Walker with special helmet stickers
Tweets Of The Day
Michigan players get helmet stickers for wins, significant accomplishments, showing up to practice every day and for other reasons. The Maize and Blue will add a decal to their helmets for the Fiesta Bowl that shows respect to one of their late honorary teammates, Dametrius ‘Meechie’ Walker.
Walker was once a high school recruit but fell ill with a form of rare bone cancer. He was Michigan’s honorary captain for the Maryland game, given the game ball and a special part of the team this season, ever since he visited fall camp practice and was wheeled into the end zone for a touchdown at The Big House. Walker recently passed away, but his legacy will live on within the Michigan program.
Former Michigan outside linebacker David Ojabo tore his Achilles during the Wolverines’ March pro day, was a second-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens, rehabbed for months and is set to make his NFL debut Saturday against the Browns, according to a report.
Michigan is now one of six programs to have made back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances since the event’s inception in 2014, and that’s a huge benefit for the Maize and Blue as they prepare to take on TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. Last season, some players said, Michigan was excited to be in the playoff. Now, the Wolverines are ready to have an even better chance to compete for the national championship.
On Thursday, the Wolverines welcomed in their first sophomore verbal commitment in Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star cornerback Chris Ewald Jr., who made the surprise announcement to shut down his recruitment earlier than expected. Ewald now becomes the first 2025 prospect to join Michigan.

“I feel like I have a great connection with coach Grant (Newsome) and coach (Jim) Harbaugh,” Ewald told On3 Recruiting Director Chad Simmons.
Ewald currently ranks as the No. 30 overall recruit in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, as well as the No. 5 cornerback nationally and No. 6 player in the state of Florida.
At 6-foot-0 and 170 pounds, Ewald could jump start a pipeline for other top Florida native recruits to follow suit and commit to Michigan. Even though the 2023 cycle is holding the priority leading up to the early signing period in five days, the Wolverines received a major boost in the sophomore class.
Quote Of The Day
“We kind of just bought into things. Everybody looks at it as what’s good for hive is good for the bee. Everybody’s just working for the person next to them. Everybody wants to see their brothers succeed. There are no bad looks from anybody or anything like that. It’s more just a family. We’re in here so much together and we’re always bonding. I feel like it’s a little tighter than it was in previous years.”
