The Wolverine breaks down Michigan football offensive position battles

Michigan Wolverines football unveiled its new locker room Monday, which includes a golf simulator, bowling alley, barber shop and lounging areas, among other amenities. Players took to social media to show the world the new digs, and in the process shared photos of their lockers, which display their jersey numbers. That gave the public a glimpse at the digits some newcomers will don along with their winged helmets.

Four defensive back transfers who arrived this summer showed their jersey numbers — junior safety Jaden Mangham (No. 3), graduate cornerback Aamir Hall (No. 12), graduate safety Wesley Walker (No. 13) and graduate cornerback Ricky Johnson (No. 22).

Mangham wore No. 1 at Michigan State the last two seasons, while Hall was previously No. 1 at Albany. The Wolverines have a No. 1 on defense in junior linebacker Jaishawn Barham. Walker played as No. 13 at Tennessee a year ago. Johnson, meanwhile, was No. 32 at UNLV in 2023.

Eight Michigan freshman summer enrollees also revealed their digits (listed below), highlighted by running back Jordan Marshall — the highest-rated signee in the 2024 class — with No. 23. The No. 23 is open since running back CJ Stokes transferred to Charlotte following the 2023 campaign.

Two elite Michigan running backs of the past wore No. 23 — Jamie Morris (1984-87) and Chris Perry (2000-03). Morris was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer, while Perry won the Doak Walker Award for the nation’s top running back in 2003.

Here’s a look at the jersey numbers for Michigan newcomers that we’ve gathered from social media:

The Wolverines begin fall camp this week, and first-year head coach Sherrone Moore and his team are motivated to defend their national championship, insisting there’s no complacency.

“There’s no honeymoon year,” Moore said. “Ready to attack. All my life I’ve been a competitor, I’ve wanted to win and I’ve tried to win everywhere I’ve been. There’s no time off, there’s no, ‘Oh, let’s take a step back.’ That’s not our goal. We know what we want to do, we know how we’re going to attack it and I’m hungrier than ever.”
