Michigan Wolverines football only had two healthy quarterbacks during its 15 spring practices: sophomore Jadyn Davis and freshman early enrollee Bryce Underwood. Graduate Mikey Keene, who was with the team after transferring in from Fresno State, was out with an injury but is progressing nicely.

“He’ll be available full … he’s throwing right now … he’ll be full-go, available in June,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said on the ‘In The Trenches’ podcast with Jon Jansen. “So, he’ll be able to do everything with the team — workouts, throws, everything.”

Keene has appeared in 39 games with 34 starts in his career at UCF (2021-22) and Fresno State (2023-24). He’s 22-12 as a starter and has thrown for 8,245 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career.

Chase Herbstreit, a three-star freshman, will join the team this summer. Graduate Davis Warren, meanwhile, is still recovering from his ACL injury suffered in the Dec. 31 bowl game against Alabama.

Underwood and Keene appear to be the top contenders to start, after the former had an impressive spring.

“As far as fall camp, I think there’s just a feeling that you kinda know when the team is rooting and with somebody and they’ve grasped somebody,” Moore said of when Michigan will name a starter. “Obviously, they’ve made all the throws, the reads, the completions but they kinda become the leader of the team.

“We always talking about the offensive line running the team, but somebody’s gotta lead it, and you’ll know at some point who that is.”

Michigan will also get a familiar face back in its secondary — graduate safety Rod Moore. The 2025 way-too-early All-American per On3 was named third-team All-Big Ten in 2023 but went down with a torn ACL last spring, forcing him to miss the entire 2024 campaign.

“Rod’s trending in a super positive direction,” Moore revealed. “It feels like he’s going to be in a great place just for summer workouts, and be working his way into fall camp.”

Moore revealed that the Michigan safety had to undergo another surgery beyond the one he had last spring.

“So excited, man,” Moore said of his return. “A guy who went through so much, went through the whole year, sat out and was a leader off the field and what he did, how he’s been now.

“He’s felt the best he’s ever felt, because he had to have another surgery. That really took care of the rest of it. He’s felt the best he’s ever felt. He ran, and he’s in a good place.”
