More 'explosives' in Michigan offense could benefit Semaj Morgan, others

DETROIT – The Michigan Wolverines are working on developing their passing game for 2025 and beyond, and while the augmentations to the roster and program could help, the ceiling might be dependent on guys who are already here.

Chief among them is junior wide receiver Semaj Morgan, who had 27 catches last season, but for only 139 yards (5.1 avg.). Much of his production came via screen passes, which will still be featured within Chip Lindsey’s offensive system. However, he recently voiced his thoughts on being typecast as a screen specialist.

“I feel like when Coach Lindsey came in, he’s seen the type of player I was throughout the spring,” Morgan told Isaiah Hole of Wolverines Wire. “It’s already night and day because I’m running more routes. You know what I’m saying? And that’s what I really do. I’m a technician when it comes to routes. So I don’t like want to be running bubbles all day and stuff like Coach Campbell had me doing. That’s not me. That’s not my thing.

“Coach Lindsey really understands me. He has me running routes down the field. I still run bubbles and stuff, but I’m a receiver. I’m a complete player. So I’m not just like a bubble guy or end-around (guy). So that’s how I feel. I feel like Coach Lindsey, like knew he was getting with me and he can’t wait to use me and I can’t wait to play for him.”

His position coach, Ron Bellamy, knows there is more to unlock with his game, too. Explosiveness and adding strength has been a priority this offseason for the junior Michigan wideout.

”Yeah, you guys have seen Semaj. He’s an explosive athlete,” Bellamy said. “Older, understanding the game, and slowing down for him. And he’s just doing a lot of great things. Semaj had a really good spring and just keep chasing that greatness.

“He had a really good spring, and I’m excited to kind of see where summer goes for him. And then obviously, camp, we’ll go to camp in August. But yeah, Semaj, he’s stronger, more explosive. I’m excited for him.”

”You’ll have more explosives,” Bellamy said. “He’s balanced… Chip ran the ball with Omarion Hampton and obviously had [quarterback] Drake Maye the year before. But if you’ve followed Chip’s career, he’s a balanced guy, but he’s gonna take some shots down the field and we’re super excited about that.

A little different brand of football, but we’re Michigan, we’re still gonna run a football and we’re going to throw the football. We’re gonna be balancing that and we’re gonna play complementary ball.”
