Newsstand: Dan Wetzel speaks on Sherrone Moore suspension

The Michigan Wolverines could be without head coach Sherrone Moore for two games early in the 2025 regular season, stemming from his part in the NCAA’s case against U-M for sign-stealing. Moore is accused of deleting text messages with former analyst Connor Stalions, though the NCAA recovered those messages with nothing linking to the sign operation.
Moore and Michigan are set to self-impose a two-game suspension for the third and fourth games of the season against Central Michigan and at Nebraska, respectively.
ESPN’s Dan Wetzel is skeptical that the NCAA will accept the punishment.
“Not the first two games of the season. It’ll be games three and four, because — well, we don’t know, but we can speculate this: Sherrone Moore went to Oklahoma,” Wetzel said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “He was an offensive lineman at Oklahoma. And the second game is Michigan at Oklahoma, and this would allow him to coach against his alma mater and then serve a two-game suspension. So we’ll see if the NCAA accepts that.”

The case with the NCAA is still ongoing, but we could get some clarity in the next month or so. Michigan is set to meet with the committee on infractions on June 6-7.

Michigan quote of the day
”What we’ve been saying is basically what we’ve been saying for the last several months, that the penalty that the NCAA wants is a Sherrone Moore suspension at some point. And from what we’ve heard from several sources, extremely close to it, that it was initially a lot more. This has not been accepted by the NCAA yet as the final punishment or anything like that. But we’d heard initially maybe he gets a year, then it was maybe six games. So Michigan I think is looking right now at it as this is what we’re willing to accept.
