The Michigan Wolverines roster for 2025-26 is still coming together, but one of the members of last year’s team has found his second home of the transfer portal. Former wing Sam Walters, who originally committed to Mississippi State, signed with SMU this week.

Walters will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Mustangs.

Walters played in 23 games this season at Michigan, averaging 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game in 12.7 minutes. Known as a sniper with length, Walters hit 36.6% of his shots from distance this season. He missed the final month and a half while dealing with a back injury and last played on Feb. 8 at Indiana. Walters scored a season-high 13 points twice this season in wins over Tarleton State and Western Kentucky in non-conference play.

Michigan lost five players in the transfer portal as of April 22, including Walters, point guard Tre Donaldson, and freshman guards Phat Phat Brooks and Justin Pippen and graduate Jace Howard, who is seeking a sixth season of eligibility via a medical hardship.

The spring portal closes on April 22, but there could be names that trickle in over the days that follow. Player additions can still be made with players who have yet to find homes in the portal.

Michigan quote of the day

“So to me it was more about watching his protection on the offensive line and you can tell with some one-on-one matchups how guys are faring. And it was basically what we’d heard during the spring from our sources that there are a lot of guys that need a lot of work. Left tackle is going to be an issue. So hopefully they give him some help upfront. It doesn’t look like they’re gonna get it in the portal at this point, so they’re gonna have to really improve. But this guy is the real deal. He is gonna win a lot of football games here.”
