Former Michigan Wolverines player Andre Seldon died Saturday in a tragic drowning at a Utah reservoir, the school announced. The Belleville, Michigan native was 22 years old.

According to the Cache County Sherriff’s Office, a search began Saturday afternoon after police took calls on an individual diving from a cliff into the water at Porcupine Reservoir and not resurfacing after the dive. His body was recovered around 9:05 p.m. on Saturday.

“Our investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Seldon joined Utah State this offseason after transferring from New Mexico State, where he spent the last two seasons playing under now-Utah State interim coach Nate Dreiling.

“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” Dreiling said in a statement. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Seldon was a four-star recruit out of the state of Michigan in the 2020 class and played in two games during his Michigan career. He helped lead Belleville to a 12-1 record in the state semifinals as a senior in 2019 after starring in a starting role for three seasons.

Michigan quote of the day

“As he meets with reporters this week, perhaps the biggest question Moore has to answer is at quarterback. J.J. McCarthy is out after going to the Minnesota Vikings in the draft, meaning Alex OrjiDavis Warren and Jack Tuttle will vie for the chance to replace him. That is a virtual certainty to come up when Moore speaks this week.

Of course, Big Ten Media Days will also be an opportunity for Moore to present his vision for Michigan in 2024 and beyond. The expectations remain the same, though, and it’ll be interesting to see how he plans to handle the departures of McCarthy, Blake CorumMike Sainristil and more key figures on last year’s national title-winning team.
