Michigan junior center Hunter Dickinson has become one of the bigger villains in the Big Ten for his outspoken persona. This applies especially to the Michigan State Spartan fanbase, who made sure he knew how they felt ahead of Saturday’s 59-53 Wolverine loss in East Lansing.

Dickinson had a decent showing with 18 points, 7 rebounds and a block on the night, but expected a little bit more from the Breslin Center crowd. The boos were loud during the pregame warmups, but not quite as venomous when the day started.

“I was expecting a little bit more if I’m being honest,” Dickinson said with a smile after the game. “I thought it was going to be a little bit worse. It was pretty fun.”

Despite the fun that was had, it was still another loss for Michigan, dropping it to 9-6 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play. The team has turned a page from its loss to Central Michigan last week, but they felt like they let an opportunity at a big road win slip away.

“It hurts. It felt like this was the one, man,” he said. “When we brought it down to six and they called that timeout [4:23 left], everything was clicking for us. We were getting stops.

“But when you get yourself down 14 points in the second half against a really good team and a really well-coached team, it’s hard to get back in the game. We did that. It shows how much fight we have. But when you’re trying to get back in the game you can’t afford any mistakes and we just had a couple too many.”

Michigan is next in action on Thursday night in a road trip at Iowa.

Michigan quote of the day

“We’ve got to do it by committee. That’s how basketball goes sometimes, doesn’t always go as you planned. As coaches we have to figure it out, as players we have to figure it out on the floor.

“Unfortunately, it’s tough when you have your primary ball-handler on the bench in foul trouble and you also have one of your top scorers, who is also one of your secondary ball handlers (on the bench). But we figured it out, we’re not going to make excuses, got to keep rolling.”
