The Michigan Wolverines are 2-1 heading into the Big Ten opener next week against USC and will welcome their new conference foe as an underdog.

According to the lines from FanDuel Sportsbook as of Sunday morning, USC is currently a 6.5-point favorite with the over/under for total points scored set at 47.5. Heading into the year, the Wolverines were listed as a 9-point favorite, marking a 15.5-point swing through the season’s first month.

Michigan’s defense will have to be up to the challenge against the Trojans, and head coach Sherrone Moore thinks they had a good showing in Week 3 ahead of next week’s showdown.

“I just thought they all did their job,” Moore said after the game. “They did exactly what they were coached to do. They weren’t trying to press to make plays, they just made them. Coverage was sticky, run lanes were shut down, everything was gapped out. They made a couple of plays here and there but they really did a really good job and they played our style of ball. It was really good to see and watch those guys rally.

“Some guys stepped up, some guys like Ike Iwunnah, he really stepped up and he’s really taken the next steps to be the guy. Rayshaun Benny is another guy behind that’s already played but has stepped up. Trey Pierce is another guy inside. Jimmy Rolder is a guy. So we’re adding that depth. Aamir Hall made a big play in the redzone, batted the ball down, so you’re seeing guys take the next step on defense. It’s great to see. We love the competition, everybody loves the competition. We need the depth on defense.”

Next week’s game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS from Ann Arbor.

Michigan quote of the day

“I watched him last year and I think he averaged 6 yards per carry last year, it doesn’t surprise me that he’s running the way he is. He just needs all the opportunities but when you have Blake Corum, it’s a little different. He’s handled it very well. He’s even had less carries, had 153 yards and averaged 10 yards a carry. The guy is just a workhorse but Donovan is no slouch, he works hard, he’s physical. Kalel just made some big plays when it was there. Proud of both of those guys, for sure.”
