The Michigan Wolverines are currently on a bye week as they prepare for the game against Illinois on Oct. 19, but it might not be too early to look at potential transfer portal options this offseason. One that is already in consideration is wide receiver Donaven McCulley of Indiana, who Michigan has contacted, per On3’s Pete Nakos.

Michigan offered the former Indiana quarterback/wide receiver during last winter’s portal cycle. During the 2023 season, he led the Hoosiers in catches (48), yards (644) and touchdowns (6) by a wide margin this season. McCulley (6-5, 200) also threw a 44-yard touchdown in the 52-7 loss to the Wolverines last year.

Under new head coach Curt Cignetti, he struggled to find a role in the offense. McCulley had two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown on the season for Indiana. He played in four of the first five games for the Hoosiers.

Michigan quote of the day

“I guess, if you’re Michigan, there’s some solace in the fact that did they find their quarterback? Did they find somewhat of their identity, even in a loss, now with Jack Tuttle at quarterback? It was pretty clear early in that game. They fall down 14-0 and Alex Orji is the quarterback. It’s like, ‘This ain’t workin”. Sherrone Moore makes the change and he goes to Jack Tuttle. Tuttle goes in there and, in his first three series, you’re like, ‘Well, geez. Did they just become a playoff team?’, you know? I mean, it’s like the Michigan of last year. It kind of fell apart down the stretch. So, no, it’s not a team that’s going to probably go to the playoff but now, all of a sudden, they’ve got a higher ceiling with Jack Tuttle.”
