The Michigan Wolverines are alone in first place at the top of the Big Ten Conference after their 86-83 win over Ohio State on Sunday.

Next up is a showdown with the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night in Ann Arbor. The Spartans are a game back of Michigan in the standings with a game against Purdue on Tuesday at home.

Michigan’s rivalry win over the Buckeyes was full of key places from up and down the roster. Head coach Dusty May was thrilled with what he saw.

“We had so many guys contribute to this win,” May said after the game. “You heard the humility from those guys [Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin]. They obviously played a starring role tonight and they made play after play. But they’re also appreciative of the screens and the cutting and the plays that their teammates make, the shooters being threats where it changes spacing.

“What a great college basketball game. Ohio State made play after play. Obviously Royal was phenomenal. Then and then Mobley and Thornton. They gave us everything we wanted. They were good. And for us to win the shot battle, to have a manageable amount of turnovers — and even our turnovers tonight, it’s been our Achilles heel, but I thought several of them when we played good basketball and maybe got the ball stripped in the paint. Those are the ones that we’ll live with. We didn’t have very many unforced turnovers tonight, and it was a physical game.”

Michigan quote of the day

He’s a freshman. And for a freshman to do what Mobley is doing in this league is incredibly impressive. So for LJ to stay ready and stay composed on the offensive side of the ball, he’s a impactful player every time he checks in because he can get wherever he needs to get to.He can shoot the basketball and he can really get to loose basketballs. As one of our coaches on our staff says: ‘He’s a retriever. He gets the ball.’ We don’t win this game without the contributions of everyone that checked in.
