The Michigan Wolverines sent 13 players to the 2024 NFL Draft, one of them being linebacker Michael Barrett. Barrett came off the board in the seventh round to the Carolina Panthers, but even he admitted that he might have wanted to be part of Jim Harbaugh and company’s operation with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Panthers and Chargers will paly each other in Week 2, and Barrett said it will be fun to go up against so many familiar faces, including his former linebacker running back in Junior Colson. Colson came off the board in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

“It’s going to be exciting to look over on the sideline and see them on the opposite side,” Barrett told Panthers.com. “I know they’ll talk trash. But excited to see all my old coaches, old teammates.”

“They’re Michigan 2.0 now. They pretty much, they got, I want to say like (seven) Michigan guys over there. Plus Junior Colson. I actually texted them and I was like, I’m going to make you all pay for (passing me over), I’m going to make you pay for it.’”

“I’m most definitely the steal of the draft,” Barrett told reporters during Panthers rookie camp. “Carolina got a great player, a great teammate, a great person, a heck of an athlete.

“I really like to say they got me on a sale.”

The Valdosta, Ga., native was named voted a team captain by his Michigan teammates in 2023 and helped lead the Wolverines to the national championship. Barrett was named third-team All-Big Ten in both 2022 and 2023.

Michigan quote of the day

“Being on the cover of EA is a blessing and I’m grateful that they chose me. But now I see that God has blessed me with all these great gifts. How am I going to be able to give that back into other people? How can I build my teammates up into a leadership role that I want them to be and I could push them to be by not being a tyrant and not being me. How can I make the people around me even better? How can I make an impact on these kids?

“I would go and be above and beyond and do it for them because I’m in a situation and a platform now where all eyes are on me. But the real question is what are you going to do when all eyes are on you? Are you going to do nothing or are you going to go above and beyond? So, that’s where I’m at, that’s what I realized.”
