The Michigan Wolverines head into the 2025 season with a new offensive coordinator and quarterback, along with some help in other spots via the transfer portal.

One of the biggest areas of need was the wide receiver group, which might already have its No. 1 target emerging in graduate transfer Donaven McCulley, formerly of Indiana.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discuss Michigan’s transfer portal haul and outlook on offense and more.

“ I will say that he is unequivocally the number one receiver in that room, and that concerns me a little bit,” Balas said of McCulley. “And you’re talking about fair or not, he was kind of an Indiana castoff, right? He got passed over for whatever reason, and then in October, he hit the transfer portal last year and I think sometimes a change of scenery does a guy good. And I think that’s gonna be the case with him and I think he’s gonna have a good year.

“At the same time, this is a guy that in past elite rooms of Michigan receivers would’ve been maybe like the number three guy. So there’s a lot expected of him. I think he’s got the skills. Do I think he’s an elite receiver? No. Do I think he’s a good receiver? Yes. And to me, the bigger concern i who steps up behind him.

“I think he’s gonna have a good year and he’ll be that number one target. But if you can take out a number one target and not have to worry about anybody else, fellas, then you can take any receiver out of an offense. And we’ve seen that, we’ve seen Michigan’s defenses do that at times.

So I like him. I like what I’ve seen from him and the way things that I’ve heard about him adapting as a leader in that room excite me.”
