The Michigan Wolverines are still in the process of adding talent to the roster via the NCAA transfer portal, which has had its ups and downs to this point on both sides of the ball. U-M is up to 10 commitments in the cycle, but has struggled to bring in upgrades at wide receiver, as evidenced by a weekend that went sideways with some of the targets on the board.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discuss Michigan football’s transfer portal approach, takeaways from the offensive and defensive side of the ball, basketball’s win over USC and outlook moving forward and your questions.

“I think that’s kind of where they’re at at this point. You love the addition of Justice Haynes at the running back spot. Donovan McCulley comes in at wide receiver from Indiana. Not necessarily a big upgrade at this point. I think you’d like to add another. And I thought that they believed they were in a great chance of landing Skyler Bell from UConn. He ends up sticking there. Who knows, maybe it comes after spring ball or something like that.

“But he had kind of one of those admissions things where if you leave before you graduate from UConn, you’re going to have to drop down to about 60 credits, and then it’s going to take you a couple more years to graduate when you’re only a few credits away from graduating from your current school. So it’s just kind of one of those unique situations where you can’t get a Michigan degree with taking one semester of classes, which is understandable. So I think that one kind of hurt them a little bit, but I do think they have a plan. I think that there are still some names our EJ Holland has reported some of those today that Michigan’s reaching out for a wide receiver. So we’ll see how it ends up.

“To microanalyze in the moment, it would be the same thing. I was thinking about this earlier with Bryce Underwood. They’re pursuing him and everyone said to stop talking about this because they’re not going to get him and whatever, but then they got him. So it’s like, at the time you could say that all you want because no one could prove that you were wrong and that they weren’t going to get him. But then they did.

“So they clearly had a plan. They didn’t know for sure they were going to, but. It ends up in their favor. So let’s see how it plays out with the wide receiver spot.”
