Podcast: Reviewing Michigan football's winter portal haul, hoops and more
The Michigan Wolverines‘ winter transfer portal efforts are complete after Notre Dame transfer offensive linemen Rocco Spindler and Pat Coogan came off the board this weekend to Nebraska and Indiana, respectively.
The portal recruitments trending elsewhere mean a need still exists on the offensive line, which might be re-evaluated after spring ball. However, it is not fully indicative of where Michigan “lost” a courtship or not.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discuss Notre Dame transfer linemen heading elsewhere, rating the winter portal haul, Michigan basketball’s outlook and fan questions.
“You don’t really like lose out or miss out on guys anymore if you’re like a program like Michigan,” Sayfie said on the show. “You can kind of choose to be in the mix as long as you want to in some of these bidding wars, but when the price goes past the point that you’re willing to pay for a specific talent, knowing that you have to take care of all positions and a bunch of different players on your team, then you bow out, so to speak. It’s somewhat mutual.

“Coogan goes to Indiana where his girlfriend is a student, was a student, whatever the case is. And then Rocco Spindler who ends up at Nebraska. It was reported by Sean Callahan of Husker Online that Virginia was willing to pay over a million dollars for Rocco Spindler. He put in a pick for Virginia to land him. And then he ends up in Nebraska. Deductive reasoning would tell me that he ended up getting quite a bag at Nebraska and good for him and good for Nebraska, but, there’s so much that goes into these portal recruitments these days.
“So yes, Michigan loses out, but I feel like it played a part in choosing to lose out if that makes any sense. It might be the wrong decision if the offensive line struggles, you don’t have depth, you don’t have good talent in the interior. You could say, ‘Why didn’t they pony up and win a bidding war for one of these guys?’ That’s fair to question. But I think that to a certain extent they could have gotten more involved if they wanted to.”
