Podcast: Where Michigan turns at QB after J.J. McCarthy, more
The Michigan Wolverines are in the market for a new starting quarterback after J.J. McCarthy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s a bonafide U-M legend and decided to go out on his own terms.
TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed the decision and where Michigan turns next, but not without first summing up McCarthy’s career and what might be next for him as he heads to the NFL.
“He could have gone out back-to-back national champion potentially,” Sayfie said on the podcast. “But at the same time, people say that a guy could use another year. I mean, Caleb Williams could use another year. He would be better if he came back another year in college, but it doesn’t mean it’s the right decision for him to do that.
“You can still develop in the pros. That’s going to happen with both J.J. and Caleb Williams. Legendary is absolutely right. His dad posted yesterday and I shared it as well, but JJ is 77-5 as a starter as a football player since his sophomore year of high school at Nazareth Academy, then goes to IMG and leads them to an undefeated season. It’s the first time Michigan’s had a guy who has won the Big Ten quarterback of the year award. A Rose Bowl win, a three-time Big Ten champ and obviously national champion. As legendary of a career as it gets, not just at Michigan. He’s going to continue to win. That’s what he does. J.J. McCarthy is a winner.”
