Michigan coach Juwan Howard has hit the portal — and the Ivy League — again for some guard help. Jaelin Llewellyn, a combo guard out of Princeton, will pledge to U-M after an official visit this week. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports was the first to report.

A 6-2 point guard out of Mississauga, Ontario (Canada), Llewellyn averaged 15.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists last year, shooting 45.1 from the field. He was North Pole Hoops’ No. 5 Canadian prospect and top point guard in the class of 2018 and didn’t disappoint at Princeton. He joined the program’s 1,000-point club this past season, earning first team All-Ivy League honors in 2022, averaging 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Llewellyn improved each year as a long-range shooter, going 38.6 percent from three-point land last year in leading Princeton to a first place Ivy League finish (23-7 overall).

Llewellyn initially pledged to Clemson, but he backed out of his commitment and opened it up. Programs that reached out included Alabama, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Minnesota, DePaul, Northwestern, Creighton, Western Kentucky, Clemson, Cal, West Virginia, Butler, Ohio State, UNLV, Georgetown, George Mason, SMU, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Seton Hall, Providence, Texas A&M, Miami, Memphis, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Washington State, Purdue, USC, Virginia, Wisconsin and Oklahoma.

What it means for Michigan

Michigan needed depth at the guard position, with Frankie Collins (11 minutes per game, 16.7 percent from three-point range) the only point returning with experience. The Wolverines will also bring in freshman point guard Dug McDaniel.

This one, though, will remind many Michigan fans of Mike Smith’s addition two years ago. The Columbia transfer wasn’t as big as Llewellyn, but he proved to be a great fit.

Llewellyn de-committed from Clemson only a week after his April 12 pledge when the Tigers lost some assistant coaches. That seemed to be the deciding factor. Clemson’s loss, however, is Michigan’s gain. Llewellyn will likely join the team in June.

The Wolverines will continue looking at others, too, while they wait on decision from several of their own. Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan have declared for the NBA Draft. There’s often other attrition, as well.

Players have until May 1 to enter the transfer portal and still be eligible for immediate playing time in 2022-23.
