The Michigan Wolverines are moving forward with junior Alex Orji at the quarterback position after a three-game trial run of Davis Warren. With an enormous Big Ten opener looming against USC, should fans be excited or pessimistic about the change at QB1.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Clayton Sayfie and Chris Balas discuss Michigan’s decision to name Alex Orji the starting quarterback to kick off USC week, Sherrone Moore‘s Monday press conference and more.

“The decision is fine,” Balas said. “You’ve got to hold guys accountable. That’s what they always talk about is holding guys accountable. You can’t have six interceptions and I understand that two or three are not on him. The ones that were were terrible. You just can’t have it and I would love it no matter who is behind center If the guys around them would step up and do their jobs to make it easier on these guys so that Davis Warren’s not throwing off his back foot. Everybody’s yelling about Alex Orgi for not finding holes on those third downs against Texas when a pulling guard just needs to block one guy and he is getting the first down.

“So that’s where it really starts is the guys around these guys have got to be better and who we expected them to be, not what they’ve been. That’s where it starts to me. Everybody’s like, ‘do you temper expectations?’ Well, yeah. Because this is the guy who lost out to Davis Warren who may have thrown some good passes. He had 11 completions and looked like he’s starting to get in a bit of a rhythm but has clearly not played enough football to not panic when things go badly. Hopefully Alex Orgi will [stay calm].”

“It’s all about ball protection, And that’s the reason they said coming out of camp, not just the completions, but the ball protection was one of the reasons that Davis Warren won the job. And if it doesn’t translate to games, then you go with another guy. So I think we’re all excited and hopeful that Orgi will be a gamer and we’ll live up to expectations here or not expectations because expectations aren’t very high, right? Hopefully he can exceed expectations here and be a better option. Cause they’re going to have to score some points to beat USC.”
